What is Bandwith?

The bandwith the amount of data transfer that you can have for your hosting package. It is the amount of data that has been transferred from your space to the users computer. For example: If your index page is 10 kb in size, and 100 users enters to it, you would have spent 1000 kb of your bandwith (10 kb * 100 users = 1000 kb of bandwith). Here it is important to denote that the more bandwidth that is available, the faster the server. If you are expecting to get a decent amount of traffic you will require a web hosting package with a big amount of bandwith. Bandwith is really important, because if your website has got a lot of traffic, but has got low bandwith, users will enter and would see an error that displays that you have runout of bandiwth, and this will make your users left the site and look for another that doesn't runout of bandwith. How to calculate how many bandwith I need? It is very simple, you have to see how large each page of your wensite is, plus the graphics and then multiply that for the number of views that you expect to get per month. How to save my bandwith? The best way to optimize your bandwith is keeping your pages size as small as possible (reduce size of the file). For example you can do this by saving the graphics of the website on GIF format. Another way of saving bandwith is to host your images on a free image hosting site. The good things that this has is that you would neer runout of bandwith, but the big problem is that many of them are quite slow, cause of the very big number of users they have. Have I got to believe the sites that say they would give me unlimited bandwith? Yes, you have to, cause it is true, they can give you unlimited bandwith. Why? The answer is simple, unless you are a really big company as Microsoft, or that sort of websites, they know you are not going to use too much bandwith, so they say to you you have unlimited, but if you use more than they had calculated, they would have to pay for the exceeding bandwith they used. So you ca trust when they tell you that you have unlimited bandwith. Conclusion: Bandwith is a really important part of a host, before looking for a host for your website calculate how much bandwith are you going to spend per month and look if the hosting company fits your requirements.
